Patna, Sep 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) Janata Dal-United (JD-U) National Working President Sanjay Jha has termed the Farakka Treaty a serious issue concerning Bihar's interests and said it should not be extended unless the state's rightful share of water is determined.
Jha said on Thursday that the treaty had resulted in water that should be available to Bihar flowing downstream, and added that the issue was also linked to the recurring flood situation in the state.
He said that the treaty is scheduled to expire on December 12 and said any decision on its extension must take Bihar's interests into account.
Referring to former Prime Minister I.K. Gujral, Jha claimed that Gujral had been persuaded to sign the agreement on the assurance that he would receive a Nobel Prize.
He alleged that Bihar's water was subsequently flowing into Bangladesh and said the situation needed to be changed.
"If the treaty is to be extended, Bihar's share of water must first be determined; otherwise, it should not be renewed," Jha said.
He also criticised the Opposition for remaining silent on the issue, claiming that the Bihar government had public support on the matter.
On the ongoing debate over renaming Bakhtiyarpur as 'Nitishpur', Jha said he respected the sentiments associated with former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who was born in Bakhtiyarpur.
However, the JD-U National Working President noted that Nitish Kumar himself had never personally favoured renaming places and had generally preferred to let his work speak for him.
Jha clarified that his comments on the matter represented his personal opinion.
Asked about Mokama MLA Anant Singh's opposition to JD-U chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar during the Legislative Council elections, the JD-U National Working President said the matter was being handled by the party's State President, Umesh Kushwaha.
He added that JD-U leaders remained united with regard to the elections.
Jha also responded to Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav's demand for special central assistance for Bihar's flood situation.
Taking a jibe at the Opposition, the JD-U National Working President said those questioning the Bihar government over the floods should also recall how the situation was handled when they were in power.
He alleged that, at the time, leaders were merely "feeding fish to the public" instead of addressing the problems faced by flood-affected people.
Jha asserted that the Bihar government was taking all possible measures to provide relief and assistance to people affected by the floods.
He said the Bihar government and administration were closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure that flood-hit residents received the necessary support.
